The GPS and Smartphones - Reinventing the TomTom

How many times have you had that annoying voice tell you that you've just missed your left turn, but then it very kindly re-corrects and adjusts for your missed turn and tells you how to get to that Krispy Kreme in Richmond that you just need to have? Or maybe that was just me, but most people who have GPS/portable navigation systems in their cars have managed to settle down to having a small, inexpensive TomTom or other form of nav system that sits on their dashboard and is kind of small and petite.
While these things are incredibly valuable for when you're lost somewhere, the fact is that the most recent iPhone and Smartphone is about to make GPS systems in cars obsolete. Yup, you read that right. Obsolete. In fact, the current iPhone has a function that allows you to find out just about your exact location, due to a nicely-tuned program with Google maps in that little beauty. The current iPhone will triangulate your position with a ton of different Wi-Fi hot spots in the area and attempt to pinpoint your location from there. Thing are about to get even more complicated in the business market, though, as the brand new Apple iPhone, the one that Steve Jobs is going to reveal in just a few days, is going to have an entire GPS system right inside that little machine that would all but destroy the market for GPS systems.
Not that the iPhone didn't have enough bells and whistles to really get your techno-motor going, but with this nice little GPS system, you'll be able to find out where you need to go no matter what way you're traveling. This way, if you're a pedestrian who's trying to figure out where to go, rest assured that your iPhone can tell you. The new smartphone is also amazing in it's navigation system.

And if that isn't good enough for you, apparently, these plans have officially scared the life out of the manufacturers of the TomToms, S-Dals and many other GPS automotive navigation systems. The fact that the iPhone is going to be with their customer all the time will essentially eliminate the need for a dash-board navigational system, since they can just pull it up on their phone and keep driving, which, many people still seem to do.

The only problem with this entire thing will be having people learn how to adjust to the smaller screen of the iPhone without creating an unneeded distraction while driving. The smartphone offers a better screen that can make it easier to use.

A Concept of the Future (And the Past)

Pininfarina, an Italian car company founded by Battista "Pinin" Farina in 1930, has long been a symbol of creative extremes in the automotive industry. In its early years Pininfarina operated on a small scale, producing a handful of prototypes and very limited runs of production cars. Soon the company began to incorporate aerodynamics into its designs and the Pininfarina name quickly became famous in the automotive industry.

The company continued to expand long after Battista's death in 1966. Pininfarina partnered with manufacturers such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and more to create mass production cars as well as some of the most stunning concepts ever built.
To commemorate Pininfarina's 75th anniversary, the company has partnered with Maserati and Motorola to create the Pininfarina Birdcage 75th Concept, a high-tech design with inspired styling and twelve cylinders. The name "Birdcage" is in reference to the Maserati racing legends of the past which feature some of the same tube construction styling that can be found in the concept.The Birdcage 75th is based on the same carbon fiber chassis as the Maserati supercar, the MC12, and shares its 6.0 liter V-12 engine that puts out more than 700 hp. The mid-mounted engine is mated to the car's rear drive wheels by a 6-speed sequential manual gearbox. With a weight of approximately 3300 pounds, the Birdcage 75th should have no problem getting up some serious speed.On a recent trip to the 2005 SEMA convention in Las Vegas, I had an opportunity to inspect the new Pininfarina concept first hand. What makes most concept cars special is its styling, and the Birdcage 75th has plenty to look at. The basic shape of the car is based upon the most effective aerodynamic shapes in racing. The entire car has a tear drop shape to it and the roofline is low and unobtrusive. The exterior surfaces are low and uncluttered to give it a streamlined look. The upper half of the Pininfarina's cabin is transparent, offering as clear a view of the road as possible.
Up front, the nose has the familiar Maserati styling as seen on current models such as the Quattroporte. The front grille feeds cool air to the engine and the brakes and is flanked by stylish LED headlights. The rear of the Birdcage 75th boasts thin rectangular LED taillights that fit nicely with the overall design. The entire package sits on top of 20" front wheels and 22" rear wheels styled in the tradition of the Maserati trident (the company's logo).
There are no doors on the new Pininfarina. To access the interior the entire front section of the car opens. Inside, the interior has been seamlessly mated to the carbon fiber construction of the body. A heads-up display is mounted on a triangular tube structure that is reminiscent of the historic Birdcage Tipo 63. The Birdcage 75th has a host of new technological gizmos (as is to be expected with any concept) including infrared cameras that allow you to enhance vision at night, a central computer that performs many tasks, and more. But what I found most impressive is something a little more subtle. There are now side mirrors on the Birdcage 75th, instead cameras relay images to screens inside the car. The screens are placed at the very outer edges of the dashboard so it is almost as if you are looking at mirrors, like a traditional automobile. The lack of side mirrors also adds to the aerodynamics and styling of the Pininfarina.
The Birdcage 75th hosts a number of Motorola designed communication features based on Motorola's iDEN cell phones. Some of the features are a bit over my head and are probably not likely to be used by many people aside from hardcore techno-buffs. But then again, this Pininfarina is a concept, and concept cars don't have to make sense.Overall the Pininfarina Birdcage 75th Concept is an impressive beast that succeeds in blending technology and good old fashion racing heritage together in a seamless and stylish way. If this is the future of the modern sports car, I like it. SEAT at Techno Classica Essen

SEAT, Volkswagen Group's Spanish automotive brand has showcased some of their most popular and classical vehicle models at the concurrent Techno Classica Essen in Germany.

Techno Classica Essen is one of the largest classic automotive shows in the world for veteran cars, vintage cars, and classic cars from different automakers. Moreover, also included in the Techno Classica are auto parts and accessories show, forum for manufacturers and clubs, and market for tools, clothing, model cars and others. Last year, more than 150,000 visitors from more than 30 countries participated in the show that took place at Essen, Germany. Over 1,000 exhibitors comprised of 15 domestic and international manufacturers have presented their products at the 110,000 square meters, 17 halls of exhibition space.
For the third time, SEAT has participated in the 19th edition of the Techno Classica Essen, presenting four of their most popular models including classic cars, concept, and production models. Leading the product lineup is the legendary SEAT 600, along with the SEAT 850 Sport Spider, which has dominated the European market in their time. In addition, SEAT has also showcased the Toledo Marathon and the SEAT Formula concept car at the show.

The SEAT 600, built from 1957 to 1973 is popular for initiating a massive production of vehicles in Spain that helped the country to recover economically after the Spanish Civil War. SEAT will display one of the last units of SEAT 600 produced in Barcelona in 1973. Another classic model, a 1969 SEAT 850 Sport Spider with a 903 cc engine that pumps out 52 horsepower is presented at the Techno Classica Essen. According to the Spanish automaker, the SEAT 850 Sport Spider made history as the first sporty convertible vehicle model sold in the Spanish market during the 60s 70s.

Meanwhile, the SEAT Toledo Marathon embodies the SEAT's ingenuity in building models that stand out for their popularity and great success in motor sports. The SEAT Toledo Marathon was built in 1992 by SEAT Sport and competed in some of the European and international off-road rally racing events and gave the Spanish automotive brand some great victories including the Greece Raid in 1993.

Last but definitely not the least is the spectacular SEAT Formula concept car. Unveiled in 1999, the 2-seater convertible concept car features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 20 valve turbo engine capable of pumping out 240 horsepower, coupled with a 6-speed transmission with sequential gearbox taken from SEAT Cordoba World Rally Car. Performance is at 5 seconds acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph, reaching a top speed of 146 mph. The SEAT Formula is most probably equipped with VW strut mount. Unfortunately, the SEAT Formula concept has not yet put into production until now
